Food Is Medicine Coalition Accreditation
Open Arms Earns Accreditation from Food is Medicine Coalition
Open Arms of Minnesota has earned accreditation from the Food Is Medicine Coalition (FIMC)! This recognition places Open Arms among an elite group of organizations nationwide that demonstrate a high standard of care in preparing and delivering medically tailored meals (MTM) to critically ill clients.
What Is A Medically Tailored Meal?
Medically tailored meals are delivered to individuals living with severe, complex and chronic illness through a referral from a medical professional or healthcare plan. Open Arms’ MTM program is designed by a team of registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians (DTRs) who help plan and approve the meals to meet the unique nutritional needs of our clients living with critical and life-threatening illnesses. Additionally, clients receive personalized RDN education and coaching to support long-term health management and nutritional stability.
Why Is This A Big Deal
Open Arms is part of the leading group of FIMC-Accredited agencies that follow approved standards to prepare and provide a high-quality medically tailored meal intervention for clients living with severe, chronic or complex illness(es). FIMC Accreditation provides verified credibility for the lifesaving MTM intervention we provide. We are proud of the lifesaving and lifechanging work we do for our clients daily!
What Is FIMC?
The Food is Medicine Coalition is a national coalition of nonprofit organizations dedicated to providing medically tailored meals, groceries, and nutrition support to individuals living with severe and chronic illnesses. FIMC advances equitable access to these life-saving interventions through policy change, research, and best practices.
Committed To Nourishing Our Neighbors
Open Arms began as a grassroots response to the AIDS crisis in 1986. Today, we support a diverse population of individuals living with multiple critical illnesses. The FIMC MTM Accreditation distills the coalition’s extensive experience into a measurable standard, providing nonprofit meal providers like Open Arms the opportunity to earn a credential that underscores their commitment to high-quality MTM interventions. This accreditation assures stakeholders of the reliability and excellence of services provided, regardless of the organization’s size or the illnesses they address.

Summer Meals Program
Our Summer Meals program, or Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), is a federally funded, state-administered program that provides nutritious meals during the summer to children at risk of going hungry when school is not in session. Every summer since 2011, we have partnered with Hunger Free America and local community centers like Little Earth Residents Association and East Phillips Park Cultural & Community Center to prepare and distribute more than two meals per day to these children, including fun nutrition handouts to all youth participants.
